Great for Reenactors
May 14, 2023
We use these for our French & Indian War reenactments. The public watching don't see obvious ear plugs showing. They work great, even softening cannon blasts during battles. But we can still hear the commands during the tactical battle demonstrations. The are definitely smaller than the others and fit deeper in the ear, which is great for people who have small ear canals.
Pros
  • small, inconspicuous

Excellent. Have used them hunting with both 12 gauge and 20 gauge magnum. No fitting discomfort, can hear normally which is critical when hunting, and no noticeable shock trauma to hearing. Yet, on a firing range, I'd also wear the muffs ... combo plugs and muffs. But for hunting these BlastBuster plugs are way better than any previous ear plug type hearing protectors. The Hock's Noise Braker noise filter seems to be the key component. A couple other brands which have "curly cue" shapes to help stay in the ear do not have the noise filter and caused trauma to my hearing. The Blast Busters are proving to be what I need for hunting. They are also comfortable for hours ... all day even.

I have worn all types of ear plugs, due to working in industrial environments, and these are the most comfortable. I use them when shooting outdoors and they are just right for that. I use muffs around chainsaws and mowers, though.

Excellent ear plugs, fit is perfect, as they will fit many size ear canals. Easy to install, and remove. Noise level without ear protectors at gun range is very low and not offensive. With ear muffs on, you can almost hear nothing. Great item and I highly recommend them to everyone...

I concur with Andy's assessment of the BlastBuster v. Sonic Valve. I can't get the Sonic Valve plugs to fit in my ear canal, but the BlastBusters work great in my ear. I have used them for years and love them for upland hunting. I wouldn't use them in a duck blind or any confined place where the sound could be reflected back to you. I use regular plugs or electronic earmuffs in such situations.

February 5, 2012
I bought both the Blast Buster earplugs and the Health Enterprises ACU-LIFE Shooter's Ear Plugs (Sonic Valve II) (NRR 18). Each have a feature on the other. In normal wear, the Sonic Valve sounds almost wide open due to its larger size. The BLast BUster is a little more constrained. Your hearing is notably altered, especially regarding direction, but you get oriented after a few minutes. The 6 flange design of the BLast Buster is FAR superior to the 3 flange design of the Sonic Valve. In sum, you can hear better with the Sonic Valve, but the Blast Buster is far more confortable. Both perform as designed for blocking loud, intermittent noise like gun shots while hunting. These are NOT for sustained noise environments like concerts, the shooting range, drag strip, trap shooting, etc. Get the proper protection for those events.

I love these plugs. They were easy to insert and worked great. After a long day of shooting, my ears didn't hurt at all.

I'm surprised that they took these out of the musician's area. I originally purchased a few of ear filters at different price levels to compare about 2 years ago. The macks hear plugs, etymotic er20s and these blast busters (hocks noise brakers). I found they all did the same job of reducing the sound level to a more comfortable level perfectly fine. The macks felt like an ear plug in my ear, I still use them at work. The er20s, my ears didn't find the 3 flange too comfortable to fully seating in my ear. The hocks noise brakers (blast buster version now) were the clear winners. These things are clear, small (less than an inch long) so no one even notices I have them in there. The best part is at the end of a 3 hour concert I don't even feel them in my ears. And after taking them out after being up front in front of bass and pa stacks, I can hear a pin drop in a quiet room. I'm hooked on clean and less damaging volumes now, I just got a backup pair should I happen to lose my originals.

I bought these earplugs to try along with the Hock's Noise Brakers. While they provide great protection, the first part of the flange is narrower and it seems I have to insert them deeper into my ear canal to get the sealā€“ which I find slightly uncomfortable. So I prefer the Hock's because they are more comfortable for my particular ear canals.

Decent for hunting, especially for people with smaller ears. These plugs take the edge off of the gun blast while allowing you to hear what is going on around you. They are not sufficient for target (skeet/trap) or any rifle shooting though.
